Oh my. I can't find the words or any words right now because my throat closed up and my tears are choking me. It seems so crazy since I don't know you or your much loved dog, but I can hear the heartache in YOUR tone (again impossible I know) and can feel your pain. I'm so, so sorry. We grow to love them so very much and having lost 3 of my own within the past 16 months, I do understand how it hurts.

Cindy, we love them so very much, don’t we. And, they love us unconditionally.

Sadly, I have walked that path before; more than once, with my own loves. It is not a road to walk alone; I would walk it with you, in spirit, if that would help. Your (eloquent, heart-wrenching) words are oddly comforting to me, reminding me of my own lost loves who left me too soon: several miniature purring kitty-tigers, and a heart-dog named Buddy, who joyfully leapt into my world on his three strong legs… I also remember the miracles: the time our tiny orange kitten Ben came to the edge of life, and then somehow climbed back into the world to be a soft snuggly lap-full here as I type; my beloved Dusty, grey of fur, with eyes the colour of a vacation sea, who used up at least two of his nine lives in recovering from a life-threatening illness to live twice as long as any other cat I’ve ever known. Hold fast to that tiny feather of hope; know that a love this deep lives on, in life, and in death as well. I hold you all in my heart tonight, with my own tiny feather in hopes for more time for more timeless love. Thank you for the courage it took to be vulnerable enough to write such moving words.

A tiny bit of hope. We have a tiny bit of hope. Sandi, my list is as long as yours and, oh, how I have been blessed to know all my beloveds.

So sorry for you both and your boy. I have been in that kind of moment. Love and prayers as I stop to visit my Mama, my life’s formative dog lover, this day. You’ll all be in my heart.

I'm terribly sorry this has happened, and I hope you have as long with Shelby as possible. When I married the Bride, she had a Shepherd-Corgi mix, Bandit, who thought I tasted like chicken..... An intern the Bride was hosting from Germany trained Bandit not to think I tasted like chicken. After we tied the knot, Bandit got sick and we sent him to his long-term vet. Elaine was at work when the vet called from the OR - Bandit had cancer which had spread to the spine . He said, "The kindest thing you can do is not wake him up." So that is what we did. We scattered his ashes along the street where we walked him. A short time later, the county laid a new water main, excavating poor Bandit from his final resting place. Sic transit gloria mundi..... Somehow, it reminded me of the patrol sergeant's funeral in "Hill Street Blues".....

Saying goodbye never gets easier to our furry family members with such dreadfully short lifespans. How beautifully written, poignant and true is this essay.

Moments loike this are just so awful. I remember when the vet turned to me and told me that Pyewacket's problem was she had colon cancer and it was inoperable. Holding her in my arms while she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

If you don't know the Rainbow Bridge, it's a nice way of looking at this. Here:
